Bluey goes to the movie screen.
The huge hit Disney+ animated series is getting its feature film from The Walt Disney Co. and BBC Studios, who will write and direct Bluey creator Joe Brumm. The film will “continue the adventures of Bluey, a lovable, tireless, blue-heel dog who lives with her mom, dad and her little sister Bingo,” according to the studio.
The CG-animated film will hit theaters in 2027 under the Disney banner, and will air on Disney+ after its premiere. The film will star vocal talent from the show, including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack as Bluey’s mum and dad, Chilli and Bandit Heeler, with music by Bluey composer Joff Bush.
Bluey has become a real hit for Disney+, regularly ranking as one of the most watched series on the service. The long-form special called ‘Znak’ gathered more than 10 million viewers worldwide, and several new episodes were released after that.
Bluey it also helped boost revenue for BBC Studios, the UK broadcaster’s for-profit arm, fueled by merchandising and licensing.
Created by Brumm in his native Australia, the series has quickly become popular worldwide with children and families alike, captivated by its celebration of imagination and creativity, as well as its strong emotional core.
“Since its debut on Disney Jr. and Disney+, Bluey has become a global phenomenon, uniting families everywhere with its heartfelt stories of play, imagination and connection,” Disney Entertainment co-presidents Dana Walden and Alan Bergman said in a statement. “We are so proud to extend our relationship with BBC Studios to deliver the magic Bluey on the big screen – for real life! – and we are deeply grateful to Joe Brumm for creating a world that continues to inspire and delight families everywhere.”
“I really enjoyed the experience of working with the longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going forward with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that,” added Brumm. “I always thought Bluey it deserves a theatrical film. I want this to be an experience event that the whole family can enjoy together. I’m excited to continue working with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dan Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new Bluey story on the big screen.”
Disney and BBC Studios will produce the film with Ludo Studio, with veteran animation producer Amber Naismith (The Lego Movie, Happy feet) production. David Greenbaum, who leads Disney’s live-action team and 20th Century Studios, will oversee the production for Disney.
