Zoe Saldaña believes that actors who use CGI in films are often overlooked when it comes time for awards.
The actress, who has starred in a handful of sci-fi projects over the years that use plenty of visual effects, recently opened up to an interview with Independent about the seemingly uphill battle actors face for awards when using said effects.
“They do,” Saldaña said when asked if she thinks award-winning bodies struggle to look beyond CGI when used on actors. “Old habits die hard, and when you have old institutions, it’s really hard to initiate change. I understand that too, so I’m not bitter about it, but it’s pretty deflating when you put 120 percent of yourself into something. I mean, not winning is fine, not being nominated is fine, but when they ignore you, and then they minimize and completely ignore you…”
While Saldaña is one of the main contenders in the current Oscar conversation for her role in Emilia Perezher previous roles in Avatar movies, Star Trek and Guardians of the Galaxy The academy often went unnoticed. But the question is whether being unrecognizable for her sci-fi characters played a role in those decisions, like the blue skin and glowing doe eyes for her role as Neytiri in Avatar.
James Cameron’s film ultimately won three Oscars for best cinematography, visual effects and art direction, but did not receive a single acting nomination, despite Cameron campaigning for an Oscar nomination for Saldaña at the time.
The Lioness the actress also recalled Independent people who fight once to her Avatar the performance was performed by the technicians themselves.
“I know the difference between that and what we did,” Saldaña said, before doubling down on her reasoning for pursuing acting far beyond the rewards. “At some point you have to ask yourself: why am I doing what I’m doing? Is this so others can give me approval? Or is it because I don’t want to do anything else?”
