Dirty Dozen Productions and RadicalMedia presented a documentary about the June 2023 explosion of the Titanic submarine in which five people died en route to the wreck of the Titanic in the North Atlantic Ocean.
The film was directed by Aron Arngrimsson, who is said to be the last person to see the crew of the Titan alive because he closed the sub’s hatch before they left. The doc, now in post-production, will feature first-hand footage of Arngrimsson Titan as he embarks on his ill-fated expedition in the run-up to the tragedy that unfolded after he lost his signal.
“He (Arngrimsson) exclusively tells the emotional experience of five Titan crew members, uncovering the family stories behind the headlines and exposing the painful consequences of research gone wrong,” according to the producers’ synopsis.
The US Coast Guard, responding to a report of a missing submarine, eventually concluded that the missing submarine had imploded while diving near the wreck of the Titanic and that everyone on board had died instantly.
The submarine was operated by OceanGate Expeditions, whose CEO, Stockton Rush, also died. Rush has been criticized for earlier media appearances in which he admitted to using off-the-shelf components to build his submarine without certification.
The Titan implosion made headlines around the world, including reports of five people dying on board. “We are committed to telling this important story with the thoroughness it deserves, through exclusive interviews with Titan crew members and, subsequently, with the families,” Arngrimsson said in a statement released Tuesday.
The documentary is set to debut in 2025, with plans to travel the festival circuit and be distributed on major platforms.
“The unprecedented access that Aaron had to the Titan crew, their families and this story was extraordinary. He was there, first hand, experiencing it all in real time. It was extremely important to us to tell this story authentically, given the tremendous media attention it received,” added Stacey Reiss, executive producer at RadicalMedia.
The film is produced by Reiss, Antti Apunen, Geoff Creighton and Arngrimsson, and executive produced by Louie Psihoyos, Dave Sirulnick and Brian Henderson. ITN Productions presented an earlier documentary about the undersea tragedy of the Titan, The Titanic Submarine Disaster: Minute by Minutewhich aired on Channel 5 in the UK earlier this year
