In her first major casting since breaking through with the Cannes hit Emilia PerezKarla Sofía Gascón signed up for the lead role The bad onesadaptation of the dark fairy tale novel in Spanish Bad girls by Camila Sosa Villada.
Armando Bó, who won an Oscar for co-writing Alejandro González Iñárritu’s drama in 2014. A birderhe will direct a feature film and write the screenplay together with Josefina Licitra.
The project comes from About Entertainment, based in Argentina and Uruguay; Infinity Hill, best known for the Oscar-nominated film Argentina in 1985; and Suma Content, a Spanish independent global production company.
Gascón will direct the feature film in the role of Aunt Encarna, the harsh but motherly leader of a group of transsexual workers, whose routine is disrupted when she finds an abandoned child and decides to adopt him, not realizing that she is putting everyone around her in danger.
Girls was the debut novel of Villada, an Argentinian actress who is also trans. A blend of magic and the harsh daily life of the street, the novel was first published in 2019 and won several awards, including the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Award at the Guadalajara International Book Fair, the Grand Prix de L’Héroïne according to the French magazine Madame Figaroand the Spanish Prize for Storytelling, awarded by the Barcelona bookstore Finestres.
The producers of the project are Bó, Natacha Cervi, Mercedes Reincke, Ezequiel Olemberg, Axel Kuschevatzky, Cindy Teperman, Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo.
Executive producers are Villada, Phin Glynn and Delfina Montecchia.
Gascón broke out with Emilia Perezdirector Jacques Audiard’s daring crime musical that Netflix picked up from Cannes. Gascón won Best Actress at Cannes, the first time a transgender woman has won the award.
Other accolades for the actress followed, including Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice nominations, as well as being honored with the European Film Award for Best European Actress and the Savannah Film Festival’s Outstanding Performance Award. Emilia Perezon the other hand, it is the second most nominated film in the history of the Globe and was chosen for the French Oscar in the category of the best international feature film. It also stars Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and Adriana Paz.
A group of co-authors BiutifulIñárritu’s drama starring Javier Bardem is the host, director and executive producer of the two-season Amazon Prime Video series President and executive producer of the limited series Cro-Magnon. He made his feature directorial debut with The last Elviswhich premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and also directed Animal in 2018
