Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender Play spy games

Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett play dangerous spy games in the first trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s thriller Black bagwhich fell on Tuesday.

Fassbender is renowned intelligence officer George Woodhouse, who must choose between loyalty to his marriage and his country after his wife Kathryn (Blanchett) is exposed as a possible suspect in a massive intelligence breach.

“This might be your best game, George,” Fassbender’s character is told at one point in the trailer, as he’s tasked with identifying a leaker as part of a film shot in London.

As George strives to complete that daring mission, Soderbergh’s latest film seems to raise the question of whether his intimate marriage to Kathryn allows intelligence agents to successfully learn about each other and what each is up to, if necessary.

“When you can lie about everything, when you can deny everything, how can you tell the truth about anything?” Back to Black star Marisa Abela asks questions in the trailer.

Soderbergh and Blanchett reunited for Black bag. She previously starred in his 2006 feature film Good German and in 2018 Oceanov 8.

Fassbender appeared in Soderbergh Confused In 2011, Blanchett and Fassbender starred in the film alongside Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris, Tom Burke and Pierce Brosnan.

The film also marked the reunion of Soderbergh and David Koepp, who wrote the screenplay for it and the director’s ghost story at Sundance Presence. Casey Silver and Greg Jacobs are the producers.

Black bag is set to be released by Focus Features in theaters on March 14.
