Ethan Hawke gets Rave and (very, very) early awards for her performance in Richard Linklater’s Blue Moonwho had her world premiere in Berlin on Tuesday night.
Hawke is unrecognizable as the famous American music library Lorenz, “Larry” Hart, Balding, a reduced creative partner by composer Richard Rodgers. Real -time feature is accompanied by Hart while in the opening night he struggles with alcoholism and depression Okaa Oklahoma!Rodgers’s Broadway trium and his first musical with new songwriter Oscar Hammerstein. Andrew Scott is Rodgers, Margaret Qualley is Elizabeth Weiland, Hart’s “Student” student. Bobby Cannavale plays Hart’s bartender Buddy, Eddie.
But the film belongs to Hawke, which appears in every shot and gives one of its long career performances. His Hart alternates between the charming racungeur and seeds as he tries to reconcile with Rogers for a possible return. It is even more likely that his attempt to be Woo Elizabeth, an unwavering difference at the age (she is 20, is 47 years old) and the fact that Larry Gay.
Hawke says that physical transformation into a 5-foot apartment, which included shaving head-fat comb, barely covers its great pate-“Demolished my vanity,” as was the shortest man in the room.
“We did it with old scene things, to look shorter, but I was lower all day than I was in real life, doing scenes just staring at Margaret Qualley,” Hawke says. “It is very interesting how people have behaved differently, especially the way women treat you … Everyone is kicking on you, knocking in your ear, patting your head and not taking you seriously. It was very important to me that I understand Larry hard and how he moved the world. “
“He was a kind of beautiful guy’s wreck,” says Linklater, on Hart. “He had that genius, but then a gay guy, at the moment when your sexuality is against the law. He is tall (5 feet), bald, lives with his mom, (i) addict, which is probably defining a character who really screws up his life . As the alcohol is a great destroyer of art and life. “
Blue Moon is Hawke and Linklater -ov 9 film together, and their first since 2014. ChildhoodIn a long creative cooperation that included Ago trilogy, A nation of fast food and Newton Boys.
“I feel like it was a 30-year conversation,” Hawke says. “I met him one night after he came to see the show I was in and we talked until 4 in the morning. That was 30 years ago. And let’s just continue to talk and these movies come out of it.”
Linklater and Hawke famously spent 12 years shooting ChildhoodScene shooting every summer, starting at May 2022 to August 2013.
It took almost so long to make Blue Moon. The idea originally came from writer Robert Kaplow, whose novel is Me and Orson Welles Linklater adapted to the 2008 feature. Both Hawke and Linklater were interested in adjusting his story of Lorenzo Hart to the movie, but, according to Hawke, Linklater did not think he was old enough, in 2010 to play the role.
“Rick (Linklater) would say: I need to have more lines in your face. I am like: we’ll fake. He said, no, we won’t fake anything. We’ll wait. He is so patient. He could just go and hire another actor or be other.
The Linklater version of the story of the origin of the film is a little different.
“(Hawke) will joke and say that I wanted to wait until he looked so old that no one would want to be with him,” the director ceases, “but he loved the character so much and he was so excited about the challenge of playing him. We thought about him. for 10 years. “
“Every few years, we (Hawke, Linklater and Kaplow) would take it out and read it, invite some friends and read and talked about it,” Hawke says, and Robert would fix something and adapt, and we talk about it. Even a few years ago and we read it again, and we think about it and talk about it, and Robert would change a few things. It just got a little better and a little better and a little better, as long as last year, Rick was like it’s time for Blue Moon? I was like: I thought time was 12 years! He is like: I think it’s time now. And so we did it. ”
Even for Hawke nominated to a multiocar, playing HART was a challenge. In addition to physical changes, Kaplow’s alboseni scenario is touching in large parts of the film, providing poetic honors of love and beauty between Snarky abolishing and wrong analysis of the musical theater.
“It’s an amazing, amazing dialog, and lines are just delicious to say, but at the same time it’s challenging to have such a real real -time performance,” Hawke says. “But Rick said he wanted the whole movie to feel like Rogers and Hart’s song, that he should have the same changes and dynamics of rhythm and dynamics, be cordial, then funny and silly, then smart and then strange. I somehow thought of the whole thing like the song text. “
“There were points, while recording when he told me: it’s so demanding here, it’s so demanding,” Linklater adds. “I was there to break the whip and continue to push. Our relationship is to push ourselves and all around us.”
“I think it’s so surprising that Linklater still wants to work with me,” Hawke says, jokingly. “He spent years of his life, editing my performances. He is sure to be bored watching me. I feel so grateful that he is remotely interested in working with me. So I feel a great obligation to try to deliver.”
Hawke and Linklater plan to hold their 30-year conversation. They are already working on what could become their tenth cooperation, a 19th -century historical work that is still in the development phase. Maybe we’ll see him in Berlin 2035.
