James Gunn reveals how ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ influenced ‘Superman’

James Gunn offers a sneak peek at what fans can expect from his upcoming film Superman.

The director and co-head of DC Studios spoke to reporters on the set of the highly anticipated superhero movie earlier this year (via Gizmodo), where he teased the beginning of the film, how Top Gun: Maverick influenced the film and how they came up with Superman’s suit. Superman stars David Corenswet as the titular superhero, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Gunn admitted that filming the sky scenes was “really difficult”, but they had another cult action film with Tom Cruise to draw some inspiration from.

“We have taken many of the films like Top Gun: Maverick“, he explained. “We shoot a lot of our action with actual drones flying in and around Superman and the people he’s flying with, the Engineer, and anyone else he’s fighting in the air. And we did that on sound stages. Now we have these really small, crazy drones. We have some of the best flyers in the world here working with it.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy the director also teased the opening scene Supermanwhich explores the titular superhero’s journey to reconcile his alien heritage with his human family.

“We’re just starting in the middle of the action,” he said. “Superman already exists. Lois and Clark already know each other. Lex hates Superman from the start, even though they don’t know each other personally. So we start right in the middle of the action.”

Gunn added that the film’s main story will take place over a “short amount of time” after Superman is thrown into the action.

In another place, Peacemaker The creator also shared how they decided on the new Man of Steel costume, which features Corenswet in the iconic red underpants.

“We tried all these different versions, and we looked at testing with and without trunks,” Gunn recalled. “And one of the things that David said is that Superman wants kids not to be afraid of him. He’s an alien. He has these incredible powers. He shoots beams from his eyes… He’s so incredibly powerful, can be seen as intimidating, individual and wants people to like him. He wants to be a symbol of hope and positivity.”

He continued, “So he dresses like a professional wrestler. He dresses in a way that people are not afraid of him, he shows that hope that shows that positivity. And I really liked that. And I think it’s silly to try to pretend that Superman’s costume doesn’t have some frivolity at its core, trying to make it look serious, because he’s a superhero. He’s the first, brightly colored and that’s who he is.”

Superman should arrive in theaters on July 11, 2025.
