Respected Marvel Studios CEO Nate Moore is leaving the studio to pursue independent production.
Moore will remain with Marvel until the February release Captain America: Brave New Worldand will produce the third one as well Black panther feature down the road.
The director joined the studio in 2010 and produced Black pantherdirector Ryan Coogler’s film that became a cultural and box office phenomenon, grossing more than $1.3 billion and earning a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards. It eventually won three Academy Awards and helped dispel tired Hollywood notions that black-starring films lack oversight. As Moore said The Hollywood Reporter in 2018, the stakes were high: “If this film fails, it will become a reason not to make films like this. Because, man, if Marvel, who opens movies with a raccoon and a tree, can’t open Black pantherhey, I guess these movies don’t travel.”
Moore’s producing credits also include 2021 Eternals and in 2022 Black Panther: Wakanda Foreveras well as the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He also worked on projects like 2014 Captain America: The Winter Soldier and in 2016 Captain America: Civil War. Moore is credited with suggesting that Black Panther debut in the Civil war and generally for a champion of character.
“Nate is a fantastic executive and colleague, as well as a wonderful friend to all of us here at Marvel Studios. He has been a core member of our team since 2010, and his influence will continue to resonate in our storytelling. While he will be greatly missed, we look forward to seeing what he does next, while also being fortunate to work with him in a new way on our next Black Panther film,” Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios’ Louis D’ Esposito said in a statement.
In his earlier days he helped develop Guardians of the Galaxy screenplay in the Marvel Writer’s Program, which helped up-and-coming writers tap into Marvel’s library for potential films. Before Marvel, he was one of the founders of Participant Media.
“Almost everything I know about production, I learned during my time at Marvel Studios,” Moore said. “I feel fortunate to have worked with a group of people who love filmmaking and storytelling as much as my Marvel colleagues and the cast and crew of our films. But I couldn’t be more excited to apply my experience and passion for film to theatrical films across all genres, including returning to the world of Wakanda for Black Panther 3.”
