If the movie is from 2006 Holiday is included on your list of must-see holiday movies, that really wasn’t Nancy Meyers’ intention.
The writer and director recently revealed on The Hollywood gold podcast that “she had never seen it as a holiday movie in her life.”
“I know his name Holiday because they’re going on vacation, but you could call it that if it was summer,” she said, adding that she was “a little shocked at how much Christmas is in it” after watching it again the other day. .
The rom-com stars Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black and the late Eli Wallach. It follows newsreel editor Amanda, who lives in Los Angeles, and journalist Iris, who lives in Surrey, England. The two decide to switch houses for two weeks at Christmas, hoping to forget their troubled love lives, but love finds them anyway.
“I never thought it would be, you know, a movie you watched during the holidays. … I didn’t think about it that way. I just really wanted to tell the story of these people,” Meyers explained. “I put it on Christmas Day because it can be lonely. As I noticed last night while watching again, they are all damaged.”
The It’s complicated the director noted that while she felt Black’s character Miles was the “least” damaged, “they’re all pretty damaged.”
“And the holidays seem like a good time to address those issues,” Meyers continued. “So that was it, not, ‘Hey, I think I’m going to make a festive holiday movie.’ Not at all.”
Despite Something has to give directing intentions, Holiday still found its way to Christmas classic status.
